Sources of GRO Problems
Frequent GRO Opening Issues
Audacity is Not Installed
You attempt to load your GRO file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The GRO File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Audacity missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your GRO because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens GRO files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Audacity Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Allegro MIDI File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Audacity installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Allegro MIDI File file was created by a newer Audacity than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the GRO file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening GRO files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of GRO File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Audacity installed, you can still experience difficulties opening GROs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening GRO files. Additional factors include:
- GRO file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the GRO file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a GRO program, such as Audacity
- The GRO itself is corrupted
- The GRO is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to GROs has device driver corruption
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Allegro MIDI File file
