Understanding HPL Issues
Troubles Opening HPL Files
Canvas X Removed
When you double-click your HPL file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Canvas X installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your HPL because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have Canvas X installed, and you know of another program to open your HPL file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Canvas X Version
Sometimes your installed version of Canvas X won't support your HP Graphics Language Plotter File file. Installing the latest version of Canvas X from ACD Systems is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your HP Graphics Language Plotter File file was created by a newer version of Canvas X than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of HPL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of HPL file opening issues are due to not having the correct Canvas X version installed.
Additional HPL Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening HPL files even with the latest version of Canvas X installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading HPL files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:
- HPL file type Registry entries are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the HPL file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a HPL-associated program (eg. Canvas X)
- Something has caused file corruption of your HPL
- The HPL is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your HPL file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your HP Graphics Language Plotter File file successfully
