Troubleshooting Problems Opening HPW Files
Troubles Opening HPW Files
Missing Corel WordPerfect
When trying to open your HPW file, you get the error "Can't Open HPW File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Corel WordPerfect for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your HPW with Corel WordPerfect, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HPW, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Corel WordPerfect
In other instances, your Hewlett-Packard Word Document File file version may not be supported by your version of Corel WordPerfect. If you do not have the proper version Corel WordPerfect (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Hewlett-Packard Word Document File file version that was created by a newer version of Corel WordPerfect than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of HPW file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening HPW files are due to having the wrong version of Corel WordPerfect installed.
Other HPW File Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Corel WordPerfect will resolve your issue. Other HPW opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for HPW are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the HPW file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Corel WordPerfect or other HPW-related program
- File corruption affecting your HPW file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your HPW
- Hardware associated with HPW has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your Hewlett-Packard Word Document File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
