Understanding LJ Issues
Common Problems Opening LJ Files
HP LaserJet Driver Not Present
You attempt to load your LJ file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The LJ File Extension". Customarily, this means that HP LaserJet Driver is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have HP LaserJet Driver installed, and you know of another program to open your LJ file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated HP LaserJet Driver
Your HP LaserJet Graphic file is incompatible with HP LaserJet Driver because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Hewlett-Packard website to download (or purchase) the latest version of HP LaserJet Driver. This issue mainly occurs when your HP LaserJet Graphic file was created by a newer version of HP LaserJet Driver than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of LJ file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening LJ files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening LJs
Even with the correct version of HP LaserJet Driver installed, you can still experience difficulties opening LJs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening LJ files. These issues include:
- Invalid LJ file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the LJ file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of HP LaserJet Driver that did not fully complete
- Your LJ file is corrupted (issues with your HP LaserJet Graphic file itself)
- Your LJ has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with LJ has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your HP LaserJet Graphic file
