PVM Troubleshooting

Typical PVM Opening Challenges

VMware Fusion Disappeared

If you attempt to load your PVM file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PVM Files". If so, it typically means that you don't have VMware Fusion installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your PVM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your PVM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Outdated VMware Fusion

Your Parallels Virtual Machine file is incompatible with VMware Fusion because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the VMware website to download (or purchase) the latest version of VMware Fusion. Your Parallels Virtual Machine file was probably created by a newer release of VMware Fusion than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your PVM, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening PVM files are due to having the wrong version of VMware Fusion installed.

Other PVM File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right VMware Fusion version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PVM files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PVMs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • PVM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry PVM description
  • Partial installation of VMware Fusion that did not fully complete
  • File corruption affecting your PVM file
  • The PVM is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to PVMs has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Parallels Virtual Machine format
