Understanding UPD Issues
Frequent UPD Opening Issues
Microsoft Notepad Removed
If you attempt to load your UPD file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open UPD Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Notepad missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your UPD because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your UPD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Microsoft Notepad
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your Program Update Information file. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Notepad from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Program Update Information file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Notepad than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of UPD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the UPD file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Notepad installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening UPDs
Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another UPD-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Program Update Information files. If you are still having problems opening UPD files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- File references in the Windows Registry for UPD are wrong
- Corruption of the UPD file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a UPD-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
- File corruption affecting your UPD file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your UPD
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your UPD file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Program Update Information file
