WLM File Complications
Common WLM Opening Problems
XnView MP is Not Installed
You attempt to load your WLM file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The WLM File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have XnView MP for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your WLM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated XnView MP
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a CompW Image Format File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of XnView MP from XnSoft is recommended. Your CompW Image Format File file was probably created by a newer release of XnView MP than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your WLM, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening WLM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading WLM Files
Assuming you have the right XnView MP version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening WLM files. If you are still having problems opening WLM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- WLM file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the WLM file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a WLM-associated program (eg. XnView MP)
- WLM file corruption
- WLM file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to WLMs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your CompW Image Format File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
