Understanding DFM Issues
Common DFM Opening Problems
Notepad++ Isn't There
When trying to open your DFM file, you get the error "Can't Open DFM File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Notepad++ for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the DFM file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens DFM files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Notepad++ Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Notepad++ installed that's incompatible with your Pascal File type. Installing the latest version of Notepad++ from Don Ho is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Pascal File file was created by a newer version of Notepad++ than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your DFM file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening DFM files are due to having the wrong version of Notepad++ installed.
Other Causes of DFM File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right Notepad++ version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening DFM files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DFMs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for DFM
- Accidental deletion of the description of the DFM file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a DFM program, such as Notepad++
- Your DFM file is corrupted (issues with your Pascal File file itself)
- Malware-tainted DFM file can't be opened
- Device drivers for DFM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Pascal File files
