Understanding 3MM Issues
Troubles Opening 3MM Files
3D Movie Maker is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open 3MM Files" when trying to open your 3MM. If so, it typically means that you don't have 3D Movie Maker installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your 3MM file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: Another 3MM-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
3D Movie Maker is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest 3D Movie Maker version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file was probably created by a newer release of 3D Movie Maker than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the 3MM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening 3MM files are due to having the incorrect version of 3D Movie Maker installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading 3MM Files
You can still experience errors opening 3MM files even with the latest version of 3D Movie Maker installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening 3MM files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid 3MM file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the 3MM file description inside the Registry
- Corrupt install of 3D Movie Maker or other 3MM-related program
- Your 3MM file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File file itself)
- The 3MM is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with 3MM software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Video File files
