509 Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening 509 Files
Missing Internet Explorer
When trying to open your 509 file, you get the error "Can't Open 509 File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Internet Explorer isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your 509 with Internet Explorer, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another 509-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Internet Explorer is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Internet Security Certificate file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Internet Explorer from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Internet Security Certificate file version that was created by a newer version of Internet Explorer than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the 509 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Internet Explorer version on your computer can cause problems opening 509 files.
Other Causes of 509 File Opening Problems
Errors opening Internet Security Certificate files can still occur even with the latest Internet Explorer software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening 509 files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid 509 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The 509 file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Internet Explorer or another 509 application experienced a flawed installation
- Your 509 file is corrupted (issues with your Internet Security Certificate file itself)
- Your 509 has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 509 file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Internet Security Certificate file
