866 Troubleshooting

Issues Opening 866 Files

Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Not Installed

You attempt to load your 866 file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The 866 File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual FoxPro missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your 866 with Microsoft Visual FoxPro, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your 866 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual FoxPro 98 Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Visual FoxPro 98 Data file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 866 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening 866 files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed.

Other 866 File Opening Causes

Although you might already have Microsoft Visual FoxPro or another 866-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Visual FoxPro 98 Data files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 866s. Additional factors include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for 866
  • The 866 file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Visual FoxPro that did not fully complete
  • The 866 itself is corrupted
  • Malware-tainted 866 file can't be opened
  • Drivers associated with 866 software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Visual FoxPro 98 Data file
