Troubleshoot ADDIN Files
Common Problems Opening ADDIN Files
Missing Microsoft Visual Studio
When trying to open your ADDIN file, you get the error "Can't Open ADDIN File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your ADDIN because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your ADDIN file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Visual Studio Add-in file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Microsoft Visual Studio Add-in file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your ADDIN file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the ADDIN file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Additional ADDIN Opening Issues
Errors opening Microsoft Visual Studio Add-in files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening ADDIN files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ADDIN
- The ADDIN file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
- Your ADDIN can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- ADDIN file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with ADDIN software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your Microsoft Visual Studio Add-in file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
