Troubleshooting Problems Opening ADML Files
Frequent ADML Opening Issues
Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor Disappeared
Double-clicking your ADML file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ADML File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ADML file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your ADML file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor installed that's incompatible with your Group Policy Language-Specific Administrative Template type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Group Policy Language-Specific Administrative Template file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor than you have on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ADML file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ADML files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor installed.
Other ADML File Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ADMLs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ADMLs. These issues include:
- ADML file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the ADML file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a ADML-associated program (eg. Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor)
- Something has caused file corruption of your ADML
- ADML file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for ADML-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Group Policy Language-Specific Administrative Template file
