Understanding ADMX Issues
Common ADMX Opening Problems
Microsoft Group Policy Management Console Removed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ADMX Files" when trying to open your ADMX. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Group Policy Management Console installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your ADMX with Microsoft Group Policy Management Console, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another ADMX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Group Policy Management Console is Installed
In other instances, your Group Policy Administrative Template File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Group Policy Management Console. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Group Policy Management Console from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Group Policy Administrative Template File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Group Policy Management Console than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your ADMX, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Group Policy Management Console version on your computer can cause problems opening ADMX files.
Additional ADMX Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening ADMX files even with the latest version of Microsoft Group Policy Management Console installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening ADMX files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for ADMX are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the ADMX file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ADMX format
- File corruption affecting your ADMX file
- The ADMX is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with ADMX has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Group Policy Administrative Template File file
