Troubles Opening APP Files
Symbian OS Disappeared
When you double-click your APP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Symbian OS isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your APP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your APP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Symbian OS is Installed
In other instances, your Symbian OS Application file version may not be supported by your version of Symbian OS. You will need to download a newer version of Symbian OS if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Symbian OS Application file was created by a newer version of Symbian OS than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of APP file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Symbian OS version on your computer can cause problems opening APP files.
Additional APP Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening APP files even with the latest version of Symbian OS installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening APP files. Other contributing causes:
- APP file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the APP file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the APP format
- Your APP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your APP is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with APP software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Symbian OS Application file
