APPX File Complications
Frequent APPX Opening Issues
Microsoft Windows 8 is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open APPX Files" when trying to open your APPX. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Windows 8 is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your APPX with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your APPX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Windows 8 is Installed
In other instances, your Windows 8 App Package file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows 8. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Windows 8 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Windows 8 App Package file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows 8 than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your APPX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows 8 version on your computer can cause problems opening APPX files.
More Causes of Problems Opening APPXs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Windows 8 will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening APPXs. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for APPX are wrong
- The APPX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Microsoft Windows 8 that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your APPX file
- Past or present virus infection has affected your APPX
- Device drivers for APPX-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Windows 8 App Package file
