Sources of APS Problems

Issues Opening APS Files

Microsoft Visual C++ is Not Installed

You attempt to load your APS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The APS File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual C++ missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your APS with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your APS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Incorrect Microsoft Visual C++ Version

In other instances, your Visual C++ Resource File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual C++. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual C++ Resource File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual C++ than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your APS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening APS files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading APS Files

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual C++ version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening APS files. If you're still experiencing problems opening APS files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • APS file type Registry entries are wrong
  • The APS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Microsoft Visual C++ or another APS application experienced a flawed installation
  • APS file corruption
  • Your APS has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers for APS-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual C++ Resource File file successfully
