ARN Troubleshooting

Issues Opening ARN Files

Microsoft Autoruns Removed

When you double-click your ARN file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Autoruns for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the ARN file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another ARN-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft Autoruns Requires Update

Your Autoruns Data File file is incompatible with Microsoft Autoruns because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Autoruns if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Autoruns Data File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Autoruns than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ARN file and clicking "Properties".

Primarily, problems experienced when opening ARN files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Autoruns installed on your computer.

Other ARN File Issues

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Autoruns installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ARNs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening ARN files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • ARN file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the ARN file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a ARN program, such as Microsoft Autoruns
  • File corruption affecting your ARN file
  • The ARN is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your ARN file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Autoruns Data File file successfully
