Troubleshoot ASD Files
Common Problems Opening ASD Files
Microsoft Word Isn't There
When you double-click your ASD file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Word for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your ASD with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Word installed, and you know of another program to open your ASD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Word Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Word AutoSave File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Word if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Word AutoSave File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Word than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of ASD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ASD files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Word installed.
Other Causes of ASD File Opening Problems
Although you might already have Microsoft Word or another ASD-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Word AutoSave File files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading ASD files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for ASD are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the ASD file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a ASD-associated program (eg. Microsoft Word)
- ASD file corruption
- The ASD is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to ASDs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Word AutoSave File files
