Understanding AVB Issues
Common AVB Opening Problems
Missing Avid Media Composer
You attempt to load your AVB file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The AVB File Extension". Customarily, this means that Avid Media Composer is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your AVB because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you don't have Avid Media Composer installed, and you know of another program to open your AVB file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Avid Media Composer is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Avid Bin File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Avid Media Composer if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Avid Bin File file was created by a newer Avid Media Composer than what you have installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your AVB file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening AVB files are due to having the wrong version of Avid Media Composer installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening AVBs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Avid Media Composer will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening AVB files. Problems unrelated to software:
- AVB file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the AVB file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a AVB-associated program (eg. Avid Media Composer)
- Something has caused file corruption of your AVB
- AVB file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for AVB-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Avid Bin File files
