Sources of AWD Problems

Frequent AWD Opening Issues

PolyView is Not Installed

If you attempt to load your AWD file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open AWD Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have PolyView for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your AWD with PolyView, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your AWD file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Wrong Version of PolyView is Installed

Your Microsoft Fax Document file is incompatible with PolyView because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of PolyView from Polybytes is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Fax Document file version that was created by a newer version of PolyView than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your AWD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of AWD file opening issues are due to not having the correct PolyView version installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading AWD Files

You can still experience errors opening AWD files even with the latest version of PolyView installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening AWDs. Other contributing causes:

  • Invalid AWD file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the AWD file inside the Windows Registry
  • Invalid installation of a AWD-associated program (eg. PolyView)
  • The AWD itself is corrupted
  • Your AWD has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to AWDs has device driver corruption
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Fax Document file
