AXS Troubleshooting

Frequent AXS Opening Issues

Microsoft Notepad is Not Installed

Double-clicking your AXS file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open AXS File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Notepad isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your AXS with Microsoft Notepad, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed, and you know of another program to open your AXS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Incorrect Microsoft Notepad Version

In other instances, your ActiveX Script File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Notepad. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Notepad. Your ActiveX Script File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Notepad than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of AXS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Primarily, problems experienced when opening AXS files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading AXS Files

You can still experience errors opening AXS files even with the latest version of Microsoft Notepad installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading AXS files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry AXS file paths that are incorrect
  • The AXS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a AXS-associated program (eg. Microsoft Notepad)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your AXS
  • AXS file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your AXS file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the ActiveX Script File format
