Troubleshoot BI Files

Issues Opening BI Files

Microsoft Notepad Removed

When you double-click your BI file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Notepad installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the BI file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another BI application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Microsoft Notepad Requires Update

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Notepad won't support your Binary File file. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Notepad if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Binary File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Notepad than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of BI file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Notepad version on your computer can cause problems opening BI files.

Additional BI Opening Issues

Although you might already have Microsoft Notepad or another BI-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Binary File files. If you are still having problems opening BI files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • BI file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the BI file description inside the Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the BI format
  • Your BI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted BI file can't be opened
  • Hardware related to BIs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Binary File files
