BSM File Complications

Issues Opening BSM Files

Missing BioShock

If you attempt to load your BSM file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open BSM Files". If so, it typically means that you don't have BioShock installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your BSM with BioShock, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have BioShock installed, and you know of another program to open your BSM file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of BioShock is Installed

In other instances, your Bioshock Map Data file version may not be supported by your version of BioShock. Download the latest BioShock version from the Take-Two Interactive website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Bioshock Map Data file version that was created by a newer version of BioShock than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the BSM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening BSM files are due to having the wrong version of BioShock installed.

Other BSM File Issues

Although you might already have BioShock or another BSM-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Bioshock Map Data files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading BSM files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:

  • BSM file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Corruption of the BSM file description inside the Registry
  • BioShock or another BSM application experienced a flawed installation
  • Something has caused file corruption of your BSM
  • Your BSM is infected with malware
  • Hardware related to BSMs has device driver corruption
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Bioshock Map Data file
