Understanding BTC Issues

Troubles Opening BTC Files

MS-DOS is Not Installed

You attempt to load your BTC file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The BTC File Extension". If so, it typically means that you don't have MS-DOS installed for %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the BTC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you don't have MS-DOS installed, and you know of another program to open your BTC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Outdated MS-DOS

Sometimes your installed version of MS-DOS won't support your Becker Tools Compressed Archive file. Download the latest MS-DOS version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Becker Tools Compressed Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of MS-DOS than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of BTC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the BTC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of MS-DOS installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading BTC Files

You can still experience errors opening BTC files even with the latest version of MS-DOS installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening BTC files. Additional factors include:

  • Windows Registry BTC file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the BTC file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of MS-DOS or other BTC-related program
  • The BTC itself is corrupted
  • Your BTC is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your BTC file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Becker Tools Compressed Archive file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
