Troubleshoot CD Files
Common CD Opening Problems
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open CD Files" when trying to open your CD. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your CD file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CD, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Visual Studio
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual Studio Class Diagram file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Visual Studio Class Diagram file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of CD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening CDs
Errors opening Visual Studio Class Diagram files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CD files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- Invalid CD file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the CD file description inside the Registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual Studio or other CD-related program
- CD file corruption
- Malware-tainted CD file can't be opened
- Hardware related to CDs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Visual Studio Class Diagram format
