CFB Troubleshooting

Frequent CFB Opening Issues

Microsoft Visual Studio is Not Installed

Double-clicking your CFB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CFB File". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the CFB file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another CFB application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual Studio is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Compound Binary File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your CFB file and clicking "Properties".

Regardless, most of the CFB file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Other CFB File Issues

You can still experience errors opening CFB files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening CFB files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid CFB file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • The CFB file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Microsoft Visual Studio or another CFB application experienced a flawed installation
  • Your CFB can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your CFB is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your CFB file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Compound Binary File file
