CFK Troubleshooting
Common CFK Opening Problems
Microsoft Visual Studio is Not Installed
When you double-click your CFK file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. The typical path of opening your CFK with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your CFK file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Developer Studio Diagram File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the CFK file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the CFK file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other CFK File Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CFKs. If you are still having problems opening CFK files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- File references in the Windows Registry for CFK are wrong
- Corruption of the CFK file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a CFK-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
- Your CFK file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Developer Studio Diagram File file itself)
- Your CFK is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your CFK file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Microsoft Developer Studio Diagram File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
