Troubleshooting Problems Opening CHB Files

Common CHB Opening Problems

Unknown Software Not Present

When you double-click your CHB file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Unknown Software is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your CHB because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CHB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of Unknown Software is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a OLE-DB Checkbook File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Unknown Developer website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Unknown Software. This problem is predominately due to having a OLE-DB Checkbook File file version that was created by a newer version of Unknown Software than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your CHB file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening CHB files are due to having the incorrect version of Unknown Software installed on your computer.

Other CHB File Issues

Even with the correct version of Unknown Software installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CHBs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CHB files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for CHB
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry CHB description
  • Invalid installation of a CHB-associated program (eg. Unknown Software)
  • Something has caused file corruption of your CHB
  • Malware-tainted CHB file can't be opened
  • Hardware related to CHBs has device driver corruption
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your OLE-DB Checkbook File file
