CHG File Complications
Typical CHG Opening Challenges
Intuit Quicken Isn't There
When you double-click your CHG file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Intuit Quicken missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the CHG file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another CHG application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Intuit Quicken Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Intuit Quicken won't support your Quicken Online Data File file. If you've got the wrong version of Intuit Quicken installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Quicken Online Data File file was created by a different (newer) version of Intuit Quicken than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the CHG file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Conclusion: The majority of CHG file opening issues are due to not having the correct Intuit Quicken version installed.
Other CHG File Issues
Assuming you have the right Intuit Quicken version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening CHG files. If you're still experiencing problems opening CHG files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for CHG are wrong
- The CHG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of Intuit Quicken that did not fully complete
- Something has caused file corruption of your CHG
- Your CHG is infected with malware
- Device drivers for CHG-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Quicken Online Data File format
