Troubleshoot CLW Files

Issues Opening CLW Files

Microsoft Visual C++ is Not Installed

You attempt to load your CLW file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The CLW File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual C++ missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your CLW file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another CLW-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft Visual C++ is Out-of-Date

In other instances, your Visual C++ ClassWizard File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Visual C++. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual C++ (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Visual C++ ClassWizard File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your CLW file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening CLW files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed.

Additional CLW Opening Issues

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CLWs. If you're still experiencing problems opening CLW files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for CLW are wrong
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the CLW file in the Windows registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CLW format
  • Your CLW file is corrupted (issues with your Visual C++ ClassWizard File file itself)
  • CLW file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers for CLW-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Visual C++ ClassWizard File format
