Troubleshooting Problems Opening CMN Files
Issues Opening CMN Files
Microsoft Systems Management Server Not Present
If you attempt to load your CMN file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open CMN Files". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Systems Management Server missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your CMN with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens CMN files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Outdated Microsoft Systems Management Server
In other instances, your Systems Management Server (SMS) Update file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Systems Management Server. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Systems Management Server (SMS) Update file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Systems Management Server than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your CMN file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening CMN files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening CMNs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Systems Management Server will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening CMN files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:
- Invalid CMN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The CMN file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a CMN-associated program (eg. Microsoft Systems Management Server)
- CMN file corruption
- Malware-tainted CMN file can't be opened
- Hardware related to CMNs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Systems Management Server (SMS) Update format
