Issues Opening CPF Files
IBM Cognos Business Intelligence Isn't There
Double-clicking your CPF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open CPF File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because IBM Cognos Business Intelligence isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your CPF with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CPF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect IBM Cognos Business Intelligence Version
Sometimes your installed version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence won't support your Cognos Project File file. Installing the latest version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence from IBM is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Cognos Project File file version that was created by a newer version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your CPF file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CPF files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional CPF Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening CPF files even with the latest version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening CPF files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- CPF file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the CPF file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CPF format
- The CPF itself is corrupted
- The CPF is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for CPF-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Cognos Project File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
