Understanding CPN Issues
Troubles Opening CPN Files
Microsoft Age of Empires Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open CPN Files" when trying to open your CPN. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Age of Empires is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your CPN because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another CPN-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Microsoft Age of Empires Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Age of Empires isn't able to open your Age Of Mythology Campaign File file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Age Of Mythology Campaign File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Age of Empires than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of CPN file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of CPN file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Age of Empires version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening CPNs
Errors opening Age Of Mythology Campaign File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Age of Empires software installed on your computer. Other CPN opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid CPN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the CPN file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CPN format
- File corruption affecting your CPN file
- Malware-tainted CPN file can't be opened
- Hardware related to CPNs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Age Of Mythology Campaign File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
