CT3 File Complications
Typical CT3 Opening Challenges
Microsoft Systems Management Server Disappeared
You attempt to load your CT3 file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The CT3 File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Systems Management Server for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your CT3, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Systems Management Server
In other instances, your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Control File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Systems Management Server. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Systems Management Server. Your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Control File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Systems Management Server than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Investigate your CT3 file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the CT3 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed.
Other Causes of CT3 File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Systems Management Server installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CT3s. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CT3 files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid CT3 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the CT3 file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Systems Management Server or other CT3-related program
- Your CT3 file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Control File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your CT3
- CT3-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Control File format
