Troubleshooting Problems Opening CV Files

Common Problems Opening CV Files

CodeView Disappeared

When you double-click your CV file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have CodeView installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your CV with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your CV file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

CodeView is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of CodeView won't support your CodeView Data File file. Installing the latest version of CodeView from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your CodeView Data File file was probably created by a newer release of CodeView than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your CV, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CV files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading CV Files

Even with the correct version of CodeView installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CVs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening CV files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • CV file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the CV file inside the Windows Registry
  • CodeView or another CV application experienced a flawed installation
  • The CV itself is corrupted
  • The CV is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to CVs has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the CodeView Data File format
