Sources of CVR Problems

Common CVR Opening Problems

Microsoft Excel Not Present

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open CVR Files" when trying to open your CVR. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Excel missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your CVR because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another CVR application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Microsoft Excel

In other instances, your Microsoft Crash Report File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Excel. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Excel (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the CVR file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening CVR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening CVRs

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Excel version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening CVR files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading CVR files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:

  • CVR file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Corruption of the CVR file description inside the Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the CVR format
  • File corruption affecting your CVR file
  • Your CVR has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with CVR has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Crash Report File format
