D3D File Complications

Common D3D Opening Problems

GameMaker Studio Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open D3D Files" when trying to open your D3D. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because GameMaker Studio isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the D3D file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens D3D files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Outdated GameMaker Studio

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Game Maker 3D File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of GameMaker Studio if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Game Maker 3D File file was created by a different (newer) version of GameMaker Studio than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of D3D file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right GameMaker Studio version on your computer can cause problems opening D3D files.

Other D3D File Issues

You can still experience errors opening D3D files even with the latest version of GameMaker Studio installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening D3D files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • D3D file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry D3D description
  • Partial installation of GameMaker Studio that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your D3D
  • Your D3D is infected with malware
  • Device drivers for D3D-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Game Maker 3D File format

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
