Troubleshoot DBE Files

Common Problems Opening DBE Files

Microsoft ActiveSync is Not Installed

Double-clicking your DBE file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open DBE File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft ActiveSync for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your DBE with Microsoft ActiveSync, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When another DBE application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Microsoft ActiveSync

In other instances, your ActiveSync Backup File Format file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft ActiveSync. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft ActiveSync installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the DBE file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Regardless, most of the DBE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft ActiveSync installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening DBEs

Errors opening ActiveSync Backup File Format files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft ActiveSync software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening DBE files, there could be other computer problems. These issues include:

  • DBE file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DBE description
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the DBE format
  • DBE file corruption
  • Your DBE is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with DBE software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your ActiveSync Backup File Format file
