Troubleshoot DBG Files
Typical DBG Opening Challenges
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Not Present
You attempt to load your DBG file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DBG File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visual FoxPro for %%os%% installed. The typical path of opening your DBG with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DBG, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro won't support your Visual FoxPro Debugger Configuration File file. Download the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual FoxPro Debugger Configuration File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your DBG file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the DBG file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed.
Other Causes of DBG File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening DBG files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening DBG files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for DBG are wrong
- The DBG file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a DBG-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual FoxPro)
- Something has caused file corruption of your DBG
- Past or present virus infection has affected your DBG
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DBG file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Visual FoxPro Debugger Configuration File files
