DBML Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening DBML Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There
When you double-click your DBML file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Studio is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your DBML with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another DBML-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Visual Studio OR Design File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DBML file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the DBML file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading DBML Files
Errors opening Visual Studio OR Design File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading DBML files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for DBML
- Accidental deletion of the description of the DBML file in the Windows registry
- Microsoft Visual Studio or another DBML application experienced a flawed installation
- Something has caused file corruption of your DBML
- DBML file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DBML file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual Studio OR Design File file successfully
