DIF File Complications
Troubles Opening DIF Files
Missing Microsoft Excel
You attempt to load your DIF file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DIF File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Excel for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your DIF with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Excel installed, and you know of another program to open your DIF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Excel Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Data Interchange Format file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Excel version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Data Interchange Format file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your DIF file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening DIF files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Excel installed.
Other DIF File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Excel installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DIFs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DIFs. Other contributing causes:
- Invalid DIF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the DIF file inside the Windows Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the DIF format
- The DIF itself is corrupted
- DIF file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for DIF-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Data Interchange Format file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
