DISCO File Complications

Frequent DISCO Opening Issues

Microsoft Visual Studio Isn't There

When you double-click your DISCO file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed for %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your DISCO with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your DISCO file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update

Your DISCO Discovery Document file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual Studio because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Microsoft Visual Studio version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a DISCO Discovery Document file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your DISCO file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening DISCO files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other DISCO File Issues

You can still experience errors opening DISCO files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DISCOs. These issues include:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for DISCO are wrong
  • Deletion of the DISCO file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual Studio or other DISCO-related program
  • Your DISCO can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your DISCO has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DISCO file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your DISCO Discovery Document file successfully
