Troubleshooting Problems Opening DIT Files

Issues Opening DIT Files

Microsoft Active Directory Isn't There

When you double-click your DIT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Active Directory missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your DIT because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When another DIT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Outdated Microsoft Active Directory

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Active Directory won't support your Active Directory Information Tree File file. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Active Directory from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Active Directory Information Tree File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Active Directory than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your DIT file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening DIT files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other DIT File Opening Causes

Errors opening Active Directory Information Tree File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Active Directory software installed on your computer. Other DIT opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for DIT are wrong
  • Deletion of the DIT file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Active Directory that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your DIT
  • Your DIT is infected with malware
  • Drivers associated with DIT software need to be updated
  • Windows cannot load your Active Directory Information Tree File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
