Troubleshoot DMX Files
Common Problems Opening DMX Files
Missing Source Filmmaker
If you attempt to load your DMX file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open DMX Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Source Filmmaker isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your DMX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens DMX files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Source Filmmaker is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Source Filmmaker Project File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Source Filmmaker (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Source Filmmaker Project File file version that was created by a newer version of Source Filmmaker than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your DMX file and clicking "Properties".
Regardless, most of the DMX file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Source Filmmaker installed.
Other DMX File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Source Filmmaker will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening DMX files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for DMX
- Deletion of the DMX file description from the Registry by mistake
- Corrupt install of Source Filmmaker or other DMX-related program
- Your DMX file is corrupted (issues with your Source Filmmaker Project File file itself)
- Malware-tainted DMX file can't be opened
- Hardware related to DMXs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Source Filmmaker Project File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
