DOX Troubleshooting

Issues Opening DOX Files

Microsoft Visual Studio is Not Installed

Double-clicking your DOX file prompts the message "- Can't Open DOX File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for - installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your DOX with Microsoft Visual Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your DOX file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual Basic Binary UserDocument file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual Basic Binary UserDocument file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DOX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening DOX files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.

Other Causes of DOX File Opening Problems

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening DOX files. There can be external issues inside of - that are causing these errors when opening DOXs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • DOX file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Corruption of the DOX file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
  • DOX file corruption
  • The DOX is infected with a virus
  • Hardware associated with DOX has outdated drivers
