DPB File Complications

Common DPB Opening Problems

Missing DataPilot

When you double-click your DPB file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to DataPilot missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your DPB with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DPB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of DataPilot is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of DataPilot won't support your DataPilot Backup File file. Installing the latest version of DataPilot from Susteen, Inc. is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your DataPilot Backup File file was created by a different (newer) version of DataPilot than what's installed.

Tip: Investigate your DPB file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Conclusion: The majority of DPB file opening issues are due to not having the correct DataPilot version installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening DPBs

Even with the correct version of DataPilot installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DPBs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening DPB files. Additional factors include:

  • Invalid DPB file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DPB description
  • Partial installation of DataPilot that did not fully complete
  • DPB file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your DPB
  • Drivers associated with DPB software need to be updated
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your DataPilot Backup File file
