Troubleshoot DT2 Files
Issues Opening DT2 Files
Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Disappeared
When you double-click your DT2 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Windows Live Messenger isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your DT2 with Microsoft Windows Live Messenger, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another DT2 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated Microsoft Windows Live Messenger
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Windows Live Messenger Emoticon Image File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Windows Live Messenger installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your Windows Live Messenger Emoticon Image File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Windows Live Messenger than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your DT2, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening DT2 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional DT2 Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows Live Messenger installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DT2s. Other DT2 opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:
- Invalid DT2 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- The DT2 file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the DT2 format
- File corruption affecting your DT2 file
- The DT2 is infected with a virus
- DT2-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Live Messenger Emoticon Image File format
