Sources of DTC Problems
Common DTC Opening Problems
Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Disappeared
If you attempt to load your DTC file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open DTC Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your DTC with Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another DTC-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Version
In other instances, your Windows Application Log File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Application Log File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DTC file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of DTC file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition version installed.
Other Causes of DTC File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening DTC files even with the latest version of Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition installed on your PC. Other DTC opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Invalid DTC file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the DTC file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a DTC program, such as Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition
- Something has caused file corruption of your DTC
- Past or present virus infection has affected your DTC
- Hardware related to DTCs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Windows Application Log File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
