Understanding DVR-MS Issues
Frequent DVR-MS Opening Issues
CyberLink PowerDVD Disappeared
You attempt to load your DVR-MS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DVR-MS File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have CyberLink PowerDVD for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the DVR-MS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DVR-MS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect CyberLink PowerDVD Version
Sometimes your installed version of CyberLink PowerDVD won't support your Microsoft Digital Video Recording file. Visit the CyberLink website to download (or purchase) the latest version of CyberLink PowerDVD. Your Microsoft Digital Video Recording file was probably created by a newer release of CyberLink PowerDVD than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of DVR-MS file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening DVR-MS files are due to having the incorrect version of CyberLink PowerDVD installed on your computer.
Other Causes of DVR-MS File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening DVR-MS files even with the latest version of CyberLink PowerDVD installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DVR-MSs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- DVR-MS file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry DVR-MS description
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the DVR-MS format
- Your DVR-MS can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- DVR-MS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DVR-MS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Digital Video Recording file
